Pinnawala is a small town famous for the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a sanctuary and breeding ground for wild Asian elephants. Established in 1975, the orphanage was created to provide a safe home for abandoned, orphaned, and injured elephants found wandering in the forests of Sri Lanka. The orphanage is located on a 25-acre estate bordered by the Maha Oya River, and twice a day, the entire herd is led down to the river for a long, refreshing bath. This spectacular event is a must-see, as you watch dozens of elephants of all sizes playing, socializing, and splashing in the water under the supervision of their mahouts (caretakers).
